I love that our theme does not involve an occasion that you would normally associate with card making or paper crafting.  In fact, if I am completely honest, I was kind of stumped on what project I would make. When I think of Earth Day, I think of things on a global scale and not really tied to my craft in any way.  Then one day I was switching out some of the cards I had displayed on my kitchen buffet and it hit me!

Being a sentimental person at heart, I cannot bring myself to throw away any of the lovely handmade cards that I receive.  With the best of intentions, I have started collecting and sorting these cards into boxes by occasion planning to use them on scrapbook layouts.  Confession time – I have not actually done that yet.  All the cards are still sitting in the boxes, the pictures are still on my PC and I have several empty albums!  As I was putting away a lovely card from Patty Bennett, the leader of our Luv2Stamp group and my friend, I realized I could make a page featuring her beautiful card and that it would be the subject for my blog post!

In a small way, recycling the card rather than throwing it out, is a way to be a good steward of the earth.  I realize that this is not an action that will have significant impact, but it is something.  Not only can I reduce and reuse by incorporating the card into a layout, I can also impart some knowledge about gardening and the importance of caring for soil.  You see I am planning to use this layout to document a gardening project with my niece when she visits me this summer.

Gardening was a passion of my grandmother’s and she passed that onto my mom and to me too.  I would spend hours admiring her beautiful flower beds as child.  My grandma taught me all about gardening, composting, and the importance of good soil.  We always had fresh produce all summer from her garden and there is nothing better than home grown food!  I taught my children some of the things she taught me and I want to do the same with my niece.

Patty’s card is simply gorgeous!  She used the beautiful Hydrangea Hill suite to create this card for me.  It is the perfect choice to create a spread about gardening as I am planning to replace a hydrangea that I lost last year!  I used her card as inspiration for the rest of the layout.  The clusters of hydrangea flowers are cascading over the pages to frame the photo mats and journaling spot.  The pinks, purples and blues in this paper are lovely and make the perfect complement to the green background.  My grandmother was especially enamored of blue hydrangeas.  I was amazed when she told me that you had to have the right nutrients in the soil for blue flowers.  I thought dirt was just dirt!  She told me for hydrangeas to be blue the soil had to be acidic and if there was too much alkali in the soil, the flowers would be pink.

My niece is going to be so excited to plant such beautiful flowers.  She will start kindergarten in the fall and I think this is the perfect age for her to start learning about gardening, protecting the earth and preserving family traditions.  The sentiment on the card is perfect too – Miss Mia is capable of amazing things!

Stamp-n-Paper Junkie - That's Me!

The Scrappin' Bug Bit Me
Almost twenty years ago I was dragged to a Creative Memories party.  My aunt was hosting and I went out of obligation.  I was convinced that I wouldn't like it and on the off chance I did, I certainly couldn't afford a new hobby. And by afford, I meant time as much as money.  I wasn't prepared to be bitten by the Scrappin' Bug!

My CM Days
The very next day I signed up to be a Creative Memories consultant.  I was hooked, so what better way to share my new passion than teach and sell!  I was a consultant for eight years and enjoyed every class, crop and workshop.  Who knew you could do so many fun things with paper!  I especially loved seeing people who claimed they were not crafty or artistic make beautiful pages.  When you are preserving precious memories of your family, how can that be anything but spectacular?  Being part of a community of papercrafters who were generous, fun, and creative was rewarding.  For me, this was a modern day sewing bee and I was in my realm!

Life Happens
While I was a consultant, I was balancing a fulltime job, part time business, and, most important, my family.  I started when my CM business when my children were still young and as they grew up and became involved in activities, I wanted to be there to support them.  Or perhaps more accurately, to be the helicopter parent that is so typical of my generation!  Gradually I held fewer scrapping events, and my CM business slowed to a crawl.  I still worked on my own scrapbooks and kept a few dedicated scrappers as customers.  Then in 2008, our family suffered some big losses.  Between us, my husband and I lost six family members.  The hardest loss for me was my father who died unexpectedly in his sleep.  After he passed we moved into my mother's house, I packed up my scrapbooking supplies and packed up they stayed.

Ink. Stamp. Repeat.
While my scrapping was placed on hiatus, I discovered the art of making cards.  My mother-in-law, one of my biggest CM customers, became a Stampin' Up consultant.  My love of paper was awakened!  And. Now stamps and ink too!  Making cards is much quicker than constructing a scrapbook layout and I could express my creativity again.  Out came my scrapping supplies.  To that I added numerous stamps, and more paper of course!  Then I discovered YouTube tutorials - WOW! I learned to make mini albums, journals and more.  I am hooked on papercrafts once again!

Stamp-n-Paper Junkie

My friends and family are the recipients of my hand made scrapbooks, cards, and journals.  I enjoy making unique items for them.  At their encouragement, I have decided to start this blog so I can share my handiwork with others.  I am glad you found me and I hope you will share your creativity with me too.  Together we can be Stamp-n-Paper Junkies!
